Black Lamb and Grey Falcon

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Today I restarted with a classical book about Yugoslavia. The title is: Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, “A Journey through Yugoslavia” and it is written by Rebecca West. This book has 1150 pages, so I will read this book for a while…..

The author describe her travels through Yugoslavia  just on the eve of the Second World War II. The firt page start with: “To my friends in Yugoslavia, who are now all dead or enslaved”. “Grant to them of their desire, and make them again citizens of Paradis”.

If you are, just like me, loving the Balkans and Yugoslavia  then this is a book compulsary on your list…I am at page 197 now and still like it:-) I will come back on this book when I have finished it. Have a  nice sunday afternoon / evening!

Heureux qui, comme Ulysse, a fait un beau voyage

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Sunday afternoon, time for some nice classic French poetry. This one is written by Joachim DU BELLAY (1522-1560).

Translation:

Happy who, like Ulysses, had a good voyage
Or who, like the man who conquered the fleece,
And then came home filled with usefulness and reason
Lived out the rest of his life with his parents!

When, alas, I think of my little village
With the smoke coming out of the chimney in all seasons
I think of the little garden in my lowly house
Which is to me, a province, and much more

Nothing pleases me like the little house, built by my ancestors
Not the Roman palaces, with their ostentatious entrances
Hard marble does not please me as much as gray slate

I prefer the Gallic Loire, to the Latin Tiber,
I prefer the little  Liré to Palatine Hill
And not the sea air but the soft atmosphere of Anjou.

I prefer to travel in contrary of the writer of this poem, he wants to stay home…

Article from “De Standaard”: After 18 years a direct train between Beograd and Sarajevo.

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Voz 451 (=train 451) was introduced between Serbia and Bosnia-Hercegovina. Nothing special you would think, but for 18 years there was no direct train from Belgrado to Sarajevo.

Voz 451 leaves Belgrado 08:15 and arrives in Sarajevo at 17:35, following the timetable information from the Železnice Srbije (Serbian Railways).

The interesting article from Marloes de Koning can be found here: De Standaard – ‘Dit is zoals vroeger, lang geleden’, for those who can’t read Dutch, click here. It is from the Belgian newspaper www.standaard.be.

The article describes the nostalgia of the older generation who lived in Yugoslavia, and the lack of that for those (the younger generation) who did not. The train is back, but it goes slow: 9 hours and 20 minutes for about +/- 400 km….At each border the locomotive is changed: a Serbian one, a Croation one, a Bosnian-Serb one and for th last part a locomotive from the Bosnian federation. And of course there are also the inevitable border controls. I know by experience that you need patience if you are travelling through the Balkans, but it is nice with always unexpected aspects…. :-)

Rhin/ Rhein/ Rijn/Rhine

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Happy New Year!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

I wish everybody a happy, healthy and good New Year, Gelukkig Nieuwjaar, Sreken Nova Godina, Bonne Année, Gutes Neues Jahr!!! Although my friends from the “Orthodox world” have to wait until the 13th of January, when Orthodox New Year start, I wish them the same already (I hope to find time to write a blog that day).

I hope your dreams come true and make the best of it for yourself, but also for eachother!

My New Year started in Berching (Bavaria-Germany) on a bridge of a little tributary of the Danube river which flows to my “beloved” Balkans…

I had a very good time in Berching, the “Les Anciens d’AEGEE” NY-event was well organised (thanks Bernd) and I experienced nice, beautifull and special things with my LA friends, thanks to them all again! Pictures are of course available and well here !
